How to update firmware on the Samsung F480 (Tocco)

This information is taken mostly from GSM-Forum.com, but I have compiled all the information myself and updated it with links for software and other information. Enjoy!

A couple of things you need to know first.

DISCLAIMER
This guide has been taken from several sources. Please do not blame me if anything goes wrong. Following these instructions has worked fine for me but I cannot guarantee it will work the same for you.

Make sure to backup all the content on your phone as everything will be deleted including your address book!
You need to have installed Samsung PC Studio first and have it working. It comes packed with the phone or you can download it from the Samsung website.

http://uk.samsungmobile.com/supports/softwaremanuals/software.do?phone_m...

You will also need the USB cable that was supplied with the phone. Once you have all this you can flash your Tocco!

1. Firstly you must download the Samsung MultiLoader software. I use version 5.33 as I have had no problems with it at all. You can find it attached to this article.
2. Download the latest unbranded firmware. There are some links below which you may find useful to find it. I am currently using F48FXEID1. It is the Eastern European Pink edition from April 2009 which includes some extra backdrops and fonts. The default language is English.
3. Turn off you phone and remove the sim card and memory card from your F480. Power it back on while holding the camera and volume down keys simultaneously (as well as the power on button!).
You should see something like this on your screen:

DEMSBL BOOT Loader for MSM6280
Downloader Ver 5.32

4. Open Samsung MultiLoader and select the firmware files as demonstrated in the screen grab below. When selecting Rsrc2, make sure you select the file which has (Low) in the filename. This is to do with debugging so selecting (Mid) or (High) will slow the interface down (even more). If you're feeling adventurous you can select Full Download and add the BOOTFILES folder to the Boot option. If I'm honest I'm not sure what it changes, but I've tried it myself and it didn't cause any problems. Do not hold me responsible if you brick your phone though!

DISCLAIMER 2
Somebody has complained in the comments that flashing using the BOOTFILES option has bricked his phone so don't say I haven't warned you.

5. Connect your phone to the PC and click port search in MultiLoader to detect your phone.
6. Hit Download to update your firmware!

This will take a minute or two, your phone will then restart and hey presto, you have updated and debranded your phone!

This does not unlock your phone, but it does add some nice widgets and gets rid of any annoying branding (such as on my Orange UK phone).

Nice tutorial it helped me very much.
Greetings from Romania.

thanks! glad it helped.

hii i need help before i click download it keeps saying selct image what does mean what shall i do

hi there. not sure on this error. have you selected all the files required in multiloader? it sounds like you haven't selected all the image files.

This worked brilliantly. Not only is the information easy to understand, but your response to users is always so polite and helpful. I used these instructions and now have a great new interface! Really appreciate your help with this.

Glad to know it helped and was easy to understand! Thats what I was aiming for :)

Hi, my f480 was recently unlocked, it worked perfectly, after performing a firmware upgrade the simlock is back again?? Is this normal behaviour? Should i go back to a phoneshop to get unlocked or is this something i can do myself? Again, before the firmware upgrade the phone was simlock free.

I unlocked my phone after I had flashed it myself, but I have flashed since and it is still unlocked. As far as I know upgrading the firmware should have no effect on whether the phone is sim locked or not. You can't unlock your phone by flashing new firmware so i can't imagine you can lock it either with the same process.

Hi there
Thank you for your thread I have F480 and i want ask you does these firmware’s support other language like Arabic language and if doesn’t how can I find this firmware because I am facing one problem with this phone I can’t send SMS messages only receiving!

Hi there. Please take a look at the bottom of the guide. There are links to various sites where you may find Arabic firmware. I'm sure someone will have it!

You say on your page: "This will take a minute or two, your phone will then restart and hey presto, you have updated and debranded your phone!"

The whole update process took about 8 minutes. The file load to phone took 430,8 seconds. (It was said after flashing.) 430 s = 7 minutes.

The info that widges were lost, is false. The guy who told it said that he had not noticed the widget settings in the menu.

Thanks for posting. I guess if it takes some people longer to flash their phone this will stop them panicking. For me it only took a couple of minutes max.

"For me it only took a couple of minutes max."

You can't speed up the file load process wich takes about 7 minutes. Plus one minute booting etc.

I think that there are no reason to update from version F480XBHH5 to F480XXIB1. The only what you get is a couple new totally unnecessary widgets, and a new irritating Samsung fun club commecrial after phone start up.

NONE OF THE BUGS IN THE PHONE ARE FIXED.

I heard that it is not always wise to update firmware. When you update, you may lose some useful widgets and get instead of the 'commercial' widgets.
You may lose "messages", "memo" and "calculator" widgets and get intsead of them "Google" and "weather report" etc.

Is there any lists of differences of different revisions?

I've never lost any widgets from upgrading to newer firmware, only gained widgets. I certainly have all the widgets you listed in the lastest european firmware. Sometimes you just have to re-enable them. I think there is some info on http://samsungflash.webs.com/ or http://samsungflash.webs.com/ about differences between firmware versions.

I read from another forum the claim that you may lose some widgets when updating. (Non english forum.) I asked if he had tried to enable the lost widgets, but I didn't get answer. Do you know if the version F480XXIB1 have the calculator ect widgets? (I suppose that only the default widgetes have changed? If this is true, then I shall update too.)

My intention is to update from F480XBHH5 to F480XXIB1 because the older version has some irritating bugs. (I do not know if they are corrected to the newer version.)
Here is one irritating bug example:
http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kx/Samsung/F480_clock.jpg
The clock shows wrong time in some circumtances. (Escpecially after long use of camera.) The clock widget which was already on the screen shows wrong time but the clock which I drag form the left panel shows right time immediately after dragging.

After 0-59 seconds the wrong showing clock jumps to right time.

It is not easy to find what are the differnces between different versions.

All I can tell you is that I have never lost any widgets going through various version upgrades. You will need to enable any widgets that you have turned on/off as the phone will be reset to factory settings. I am using the latest pink version firmware F48FXEID1 and noticed no problems. Here's the whole list of widgets in F48FXEID1.

Analogue Clock
Digital Clock
Dual Clock
Calendar
Photo
Games
Birthday
Profile
Messages
Bluetooth
Alarm
Calculator
Samsung Fun CLub
Radio Player
MP3 Player
MORE widgets
Google Search
AccuWeather

You can download widgets using the 'MORE widgets' widget, however there are not many available.

it says serial port error wnen i try to download but when i connect the phone via port search it doesn't say F480 in square brackets only ready ): could this be because i am using the cable from a different samsung phone which still fits mine, so is it becasue it has to be the usb cable that came with the f480 phone?

Hi there

It's Jordan from Samsung Flash Wiki

Try plugging your phone into another USB port as this will solve the problem in most cases.
If you do not have another USB port, either get a USB hub, or try another computer.
In most cases, just unplug, and plug in again (doesn't always work)

Good Luck!

Have you definitely turned the phone on while holding the volume down and camera keys? I'm fairly sure I got the same problem when I forgot to do that! Otherwise it could be your cable I suppose.

i got a problem when i updated my phone then after restarting the blue bar at the bottom just got stuck at around 3/4 of its part
and just went black and restarted
can you help me fix this sir

I would try re-flashing your phone again. Make sure you remove the sim card and any memory cards. Remove the battery and then power it up using the instructions above and flash it using the latest firmware.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I've followed the instructions but when the phone restarts, it freezes at about 3/4 of the loading bar. I've reflashed, added the boot files, everything, but I can't get it working. Is there any way to just restore everything?

My phone is a UK model with European firmware, so I'm not sure if yours is maybe a from a different part of the world and would require different firmware or bootfiles.

Try looking for some firmware from your region.

When you try to re-flash it do you still get the bootloader screen?

So you don't have a working phone any more?
If people have this kind of experiences, I am afraid to update my own phone!

I have to say that out of flashing phones, I haven't had a bad flash.

I have now successfully done an:

- U600B
- F480 (5 times)
- S8300 (3 times)
- U900 (1 time)

and out of these, none of them have ever failed.

Jordan,
Samsung Flash Wiki

I Have flashed a

u700 ( 8 times )
e900 ( 3 times )
f400 ( 6 times )
d900 ( 2 times )
s8300 ( 2 times )
u900 ( 7 times )
f480 ( 16 times )

and none have ever failed

i love the website
samsung flash wiki
i get all my firmwares there

I have updated my phone at least 5 times using this method with no problems.

hi der....... m 4m india so can u pls suggest me d xact firmware dat ll work in dis region

Use the guide here:

http://domsyard.com/samsung-f480/how-update-firmware-samsung-f480-tocco#...

You should be looking for something like this: F480DDxxx. DD meaning the Firmware is for India, although I can't find any for that so I assume you just need firmware with Indian language on it. If you just use English maybe you can use the latest Euro firmware but I don't know if the hardware is different.

thnx........and i want 2 know if der's ne version dat suits in ma place and which s supported by d operator pls

you will have to do some research. look at the links at the bottom of the guide. i had a quick look around and couldnt find much on indian firmware.

It really works!
I've followed exactly the step-by-step tutorial and upgraded my slow F480. Now it's speedy as a bullet!
